We owe a moral obligation not just a legal obligation to those veterans…
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON Today on the Senate floor U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) demanded that the President appoint a special investigator in response to a
CNN report that found
at least 40 veterans died waiting for appointments after being put
on a secret list used to conceal veteran wait times in the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health System.
Excerpts of his remarks are below. His full speech can be seen
here.
My strong conviction is that we owe a moral obligation -- not just a legal obligation -- to those veterans to keep our commitments to them once they separate from military service. And Im sorry to say that the Department of Veterans Affairs has repeatedly and outrageously failed to uphold its own commitment to Americas armed forces and our veterans.
This should be a call to action on the part of the United States Senate and the federal government to live up to its obligations and its commitment to our nations veterans.
Serving Americas veterans is one of the most important responsibilities the federal government has. The VAs failure to meet its responsibility is an ongoing scandal one that I will continue drawing attention to until our veterans get the support they so rightfully deserve."
Senator Cornyn serves on the Finance and Judiciary Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committees Immigration Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General Texas Supreme Court Justice and Bexar County District Judge.
