Brian Birdwell was working at the Pentagon as a military aid.  Birdwell who escaped death by just seconds earlier this week honored those who died while still living with the pain of the tragedy every day of his life.   As I lay there waiting to die I thought about Mel and Matt and how I had said goodbye to them that morning said Senator Birdwell.   He thought only of his family ... the future of his wife and son playing through his mind ... and his death as he lay with 60 of his body burned 40 of it 3rd degree. And Birdwell says he made his peace with God. Every ounce of strength and will to survive Birdwell says gave him the power to stumble through the hallway and find four men who would save his life. width=185For Brian Birdwell that morning began just like any other day with a wave goodbye to his son and a quick peck on the cheek of his wife. It started off like any day in Washington D.C. said Senator Birdwell. But this day would end in way he and millions of other Americans will never forget or could ever imagine. I stepped out and went to the mens restroom and told (co-workers) Shirley and Sandy Id be back momentarily. Those were the last words Id speak to my two co-workers said Birdwell. Just after 9:30 just 50 feet from where he was standing Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. I heard the sound and had just half a nano-second to think bomb or explosion. It was instantaneously deafening said the State Senator who now represents the Waco-area and width=150a large swath of Central Texas extending north to the Dallas & Tarrant County lines in Senate District 22.. Id gone from a well lit hallway and in charge of my faculty completely aware of my surroundings to being set a blaze said Senator Birdwell. Where his office once stood was now a fiery war-zone. The physical pain of being burned is terrible said Birdwell but in relationship to recognizing that your dying and thats how your going to spend your last moments on earth ... Burns were insignificant to the terror that grabs your heart said Senator Birdwell. It was truly a close call and day for the now-State Senator who represents his fellow Texans in District 22. kcentv.com - KCEN HD - Waco Temple and Killeen
