Rick Perry signed Senate Bill 24 which will impose increased penalties on human traffickers and those who engage in child prostitution.
I applaud the Governor Attorney General and state lawmakers for their leadership in bringing this important legislation to fruition. We must work together at every level of government to equip law enforcement with the tools they need to crack down on human traffickers.
I will continue to work to pass complementary bipartisan legislation Ive introduced in the U.S. Senate that would provide valuable assistance to Texas and other state and local governments as they battle organized criminal syndicates and violent gangs that traffic humans for labor and sex."
Sen. Cornyn joined by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) has introduced legislation to put an end to the modern sexual slavery that claims the innocence of more than 100000 American girls and young women each year. The Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Deterrence and Victims Support Act of 2011 is a pilot program that will create six shelters throughout the country providing a safe haven for minors who are being trafficked and sold into sexual slavery. The bill also gives law enforcement the tools to investigate prosecute and incarcerate the real criminals -- the pimps and traffickers.
