WASHINGTONU.S. Sen. John Cornyn R-Texas today issued the following statement applauding comments made by U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk indicating President Obama and his Administration are ready to begin negotiations with Congress to move forward on the Colombia Free Trade Agreement.
Returning from the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago which included a meeting with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Kirk said the President believes a resolution of the Colombia trade agreement would be a good thing for both economies."
I am encouraged by the comments made by U.S. Trade Rep. Ron Kirk regarding the prospects for the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. Last year Congressional Democrats blocked this critical agreement which delivered a serious blow to Texas farmers and businesses and placed a strain on the valuable relationship we have with our ally Colombia. This agreement is in the best interest of the United States and certainly in the best interest of Texas the nations leading exporter to Colombia.
I hope Trade Representative Kirk and President Obama will follow through and begin working with Congressional leaders immediately to bring this agreement to fruition. It is long overdue and I stand ready and willing to work with my colleagues across the aisle to pass the measure through Congress. This agreement is just the kind of pro-growth measure we should be implementing to help turn the economic tide back in our favor."
