Sen. Cornyn To Join Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano In Laredo Friday

width=65WASHINGTONU.S. Sen. John Cornyn R-Texas the top Republican on the Judiciary Committees Immigration Refugees and Border Security Subcommittee today issued the following statement commending U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano for her intention to visit Laredo Friday to address escalating violence and arms smuggling along the southwestern border: Earlier this month I urged Secretary Napolitano to visit the border as soon as possible and place high priority on the issue of escalating border violence. Todays announcement that she will visit Laredo Friday indicates she is listening and willing to work with Texas lawmakers to tackle the challenges along our border head-on. Im confident her visit will send a message of zero tolerance to Mexican drug cartels and one of strength and solidarity to local leaders in Texas and President Calderon as we work together to put an end to the violence and protect communities along the border. I look forward to joining the Secretary Friday to lend our support to local law enforcement and Border Patrol and create a united front in the fight against narco-terrorism." On March 19 Sen. Cornyn sent a letter to Secretary Napolitano asking her to visit the Texas-Mexico border and meet directly with local Border Patrol FBI ATF law enforcement officials and city leaders to address the escalating levels of drug-related violence along the border. This followed Sen. Cornyns recent letter to President Barack Obama also urging him to visit the border and give high priority to the issue of rising border violence. Sen. Cornyn was in Laredo in February where he met with U.S. and Mexican law enforcement officials and received a briefing on issues concerning security along Texas southern border with Mexico including the rising drug cartel and gang violence in the region.
