Sen. Cornyn Vows To Oppose Democrats Assault On Secret Ballot

Democrat Efforts To Payback Union Political Allies Will Meet Stiff Opposition width=63WASHINGTONU.S. Senator John Cornyn R-Texas made the following statement on the Employee Free Choice Act which was introduced today by Senate Democrats. The Card Check legislation introduced today by Senate Democrats is an un-American assault on the very foundation of democracy; the right to cast a secret ballot vote. Workers should have the ability to make choices without being coerced or intimidated. Democrats have made many unsuccessful attempts to force this legislation down the throats of the American people. Now that they control both the White House and Congress they feel their time has come to finally repay the debt they owe to their political allies. In addition to stripping workers of their God-given rights this legislation will also kill at least 600000 jobs in its first year of implementation alone. At a time when millions of American families are looking for work millions more are unsure about their job security and still more are attempting to stretch every dollar as far as it will go it makes no sense to pass legislation that would eliminate hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs. The American people would be better served if their elected representatives were more concerned with creating jobs and getting our economy back on track than they are with paying back political allies. Texas is a right-to-work state. This distinction is one of the many reasons we have been able to better weather recent economic turmoil than many other states. But we are not immune from the economys downturn or the impact of misguided legislation. No union boss or Washington Democrat is going to tell a Texan how to run their business or take away their most basic rights." * A complete summary of An Empirical Assessment of the Employee Free Choice Act: The Economic Implications" by Dr. Anne Layne-Farrar an economist with the non-partisan LECG Consulting Group can be found here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1353305. Released on March 5 2009 it concluded that enactment of Card Check would lead to an initial loss of 600000 American jobs in the first year alone.
