Austin Texas -- State Senator Glenn Hegar (R-Katy) has received the endorsements of both the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) and the National Rifle Association (NRA) in his reelection campaign for a second term in the Texas Senate. Senator Hegar received A ratings from both the TSRA and the NRA for his voting record on Second Amendment issues in the Texas Legislature. The A ranking is the highest score possible and is only given to those lawmakers who have demonstrated leadership in defense of the rights of Texans to keep and bear arms.
In making the endorsement Alice Tripp the TSRAs Legislative Director said that Texas gun owners hunters and concealed handgun licensees were in Hegars debt. Our 40000 members could not have a better friend in the Texas Senate than Glenn Hegar said Tripp.
Tara Reilly Mica the Texas State Liaison for the National Rifle Association said that Hegars A rating and endorsement by the NRA were based on his record of leadership on Second Amendment issues in the Texas Legislature.
The endorsements follow Hegar being named the Texas State Rifle Associations Texas Legislator of the Year for 2009. Hegar was named the associations Doc Brown Award winner for his efforts in defense of Texans second amendment rights during the 81st Texas Legislature which ended in June. It is the state associations highest legislative honor. Hegar will be formally presented with the award at TSRAs annual members meeting in Mesquite on February 27 2010.
Senator Hegar has long been recognized by law abiding Texas gun owners as a friend and ally but his actions during the 81st Texas Legislature clearly affirm his place as one of the states foremost champions of second amendment rights added Tripp.
I am proud to have received the endorsements of both the National Rifle Association and the Texas State Rifle Association Senator Hegar said. The NRA and TSRA are recognized as the oldest and most effective organizations dedicated to protecting second amendment rights. While the second amendment states clearly that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed we all know that there are those that wish to erode this constitutional safeguard. The NRA and TSRA work together to protect the right to keep and bear arms that our founding fathers recognized as vital to a free nation and people and that is why their endorsement in my reelection campaign is so important Hegar added.
This past legislative session Hegar was the author of Senate Bill 730 which would have strengthened and protected the second amendment Rights of hard-working Texas. Hegar said that Senate Bill 730 was a measure that would have prevented employers from adopting policies that would deny constitutional protections to their employees who wished to store legally owned firearms in their locked vehicle in the parking lot of their work place. Hegars bill was in response to a number of instances across the state where employees had been denied the right to protect themselves while traveling to and from work because their employers had adopted overly-restrictive policies. The bill passed the Texas Senate but was prevented from being considered in the Texas House by delay tactics used by Democrats in the final days of the session to prevent consideration of voter ID legislation. Hegar said that he will continue to fight for passage of Senate Bill 730 in the next legislative session.
Senator Hegar has been a consistent friend to Texas gun owners hunters and sportsmen said Tripp. From his first day in the Texas House of Representatives to his efforts today in the Texas Senate and as the Chairman of the Texas Legislative Sportsmans Caucus Senator Hegar has worked tirelessly to defend and strengthen the second amendment rights of Texans Tripp added.
Millions of Texans spend hours each week in their cars and trucks as they commute to and from work. These commutes may be comfortable and safe for many but others are not so lucky as their daily drives take them through dangerous neighborhoods. Unfortunately some Texans are forced to make the choice between adhering to their employers policy prohibiting storage of their legally owned firearm in their locked vehicle on company property non-adherence to which is oftentimes grounds for termination and protecting themselves by having their legal firearm available to them as they make their daily commute Hegar said.
Responsible and law-abiding gun owners should not be forced to choose between personal protection and protecting their jobs said Hegar. Senate Bill 730 would have ensured that no hard-working Texan would have been forced to make that difficult and unfair choice. I look forward to working with the Texas State Rifle Association the National Rifle Association and thousands of freedom loving Texans to pass this and other important legislation that will protect our second amendment rights as well as the public safety he concluded.
