WASHINGTON D.C. U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) released the following statement on President Obamas announcement that the Eastern European missile defense shield initiative will be terminated:
I led the fight in the Senate to fund our missile defense projects in Eastern Europe during last years appropriations process and believe that todays decision to terminate the European missile defense along with the decision earlier this year to scale back ground-based interceptors to Alaska and California represents a major blow to the effort to provide global missile defense of the U.S. homeland.
The Obama Administration has reversed course on our missile defense strategy which could leave us and our European allies more vulnerable at a time when hostile regimes like Iran and North Korea are expanding their long-range missile capability.
This disturbing gesture also sends a dangerous message to the global community. The appearance of weakness in the face of Russian pressure only serves to embolden our adversaries and gives our allies good reason to question Americas resolve and reliability as an international partner."
