Senate Finance Committee Holds Health & Human Services Budget Hearings

width=71Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas The Senate Finance Committee deliberated last week on state budget Article II which funds health and human services and accounts for nearly a third of the total budget. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee Senator Nelson questioned each of the five health and human services agencies about their programs and how the state can best fund them to produce good outcomes and truly serve the needs of Texans. I am pleased that the Texas economy has put us in a stronger position to meet our essential needs. However my goal is to ensure that this process is about more than just allocating additional revenue. We cannot keep feeding the same programs the same way and expecting different results. We need to continue our work to ensure that we are delivering efficient cost-effective services that truly achieve positive outcomes for the people we serve Senator Nelson said. Senator Nelson Files Legislation Creating New District Court In Denton County Senator Nelson filed two pieces of legislation on Tuesday -- one to establish a new court in Denton County and another to ensure that Texans receive advanced written notice when gas companies intend to enter their property. Senator Nelson has filed 33 bills so far in the current legislative session. Because of massive population growth in Denton County our local courts have seen a significant increase in caseloads said Senator Nelson. A new court is needed to ensure that our citizens have efficient access to the judicial system. Gubernatorial Appointments Having been re-appointed to the Senate Nominations Committee Senator Nelson is encouraging more Senate District 12 constituents to apply for a gubernatorial appointment. Our community is blessed with so many qualified individuals whose experience would greatly benefit our state boards and commissions said Senator Nelson. The governor appoints roughly 400 positions to serve and these appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate.
