Resolution introduced by Sen. Hutchison Honoring Texan is First Woman who Served in Afghanistan to Win Silver Star

width=65width=65WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) Texas’ senior senator today announced unanimous passage of a Senate resolution honoring Army Specialist Monica L. Brown of Lake Jackson Texas as the first woman in Afghanistan and only the second female member of the Armed Forces since World War II to receive the Silver Star the nation’s third-highest medal for valor.

“Army Specialist Monica Brown is a heroine for her courageous actions in April 2007 to save the lives of members of the convoy with whom she was traveling in Afghanistan” said Sen. Hutchison. “Specialist Brown is only the second female member of the Armed Forces to receive the Silver Star since World War II and she exemplifies the dedication and sacrifice of all those who are serving America abroad.”

“The thoughts and prayers of Congress and the people of the United States remain with Army Specialist Brown all the members of the Armed Forces of who are fighting to ensure America’s freedom and safety and their families back at home” said Sen. Hutchison.

Specialist Monica Brown was a medic serving in the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion 4th Brigade Combat Team in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Members of the Armed Forces were attacked by a roadside bomb in the eastern Paktia province in Afghanistan on April 25 2007. Specialist Brown at age 19 ran through insurgent gunfire to save the lives of fellow wounded soldiers after the roadside bomb tore through their convoy of humvees.

The military said Brown’s “bravery unselfish actions and medical aid rendered under fire saved the lives of her comrades and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat.”
