Senator Hutchisons Statement on President Obamas Afghanistan Policy

kay-bailey-hutch3WASHINGTON D.C. Tonight following President Barack Obamas announcement that he will send an additional 30000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) Ranking Republican Member of the Subcommittee for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Chairman of the Board of Visitors at West Point released the following statement: While the Presidents announcement to increase troop levels to wrest control of Afghanistan from the Taliban and Al Qaeda is a critical step in our ongoing efforts there we must continue to monitor the situation and fully support General Stanley McChrystals request for adequate troops going forward.  The President is responding with fewer troops than the military commander requested and he must be prepared to send additional troops if the need arises.   It has long been my view that failure in Afghanistan will represent a disastrous defeat for NATO and put the future of the Alliance at risk. Our fight in Afghanistan requires a full-spectrum counterinsurgency with a substantially greater commitment of troops and resources from our NATO allies. The reemergence of a terrorist safe-haven in Afghanistan will threaten the security of the United States and all of our allies.   I am encouraged that Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Great Britain has called upon our NATO allies to send additional troops to Afghanistan and has committed to increase British troop strength as well.  As Ranking Member of the military construction appropriations subcommittee I will continue to do everything within my power to ensure the heroic efforts of our brave soldiers fighting overseas are fully supported with troops and equipment so that they return home victorious."
