
Senator Nelson will preside over a sweeping review of the states top health policy challenges under interim assignments released this month by the lieutenant governor. Cost containment needs to be a major priority as we examine strategies to meet our health and human services needs said Senator Nelson chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee.
She also will participate in studies of the states fiscal responsibility and government transparency as a member of the Senate committees on Finance and Government Organization.
State Agencies Begin Looking at Budget Cuts
Acting in anticipation of a revenue shortfall the states leadership has told most state agencies to submit plans for 5 percent budget cuts by Feb. 15 in order to scale back government services. State government must do what Texas families and businesses are doing during this economic downturn -- contain our costs said Senator Nelson.
U.S. 377 Upgrades Nearing Completion
The widening of lanes and other improvements on a section of U.S. 377 in north Tarrant County is scheduled for completion next month. Construction began in January 2007 on the $14 million project according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The improvements stretch from FM 1709 to near the junction of 377 and Texas 170 just south of the Denton County line. This is a rapidly growing area so the completion of this important project is welcome news for our community said Senator Nelson.
Initial Round of Grants Awarded by Cancer Institute
The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute announced its first round of funding for cancer research projects at academic institutions and private companies throughout Texas. Senator Nelson was named a Champion in the Fight Against Cancer for her sponsorship of legislation that led to the creation of the institute. These resources will support critical research needed to fight this disease which is cost our state precious lives and resources she said.
Traffic Signal Improvements Slated for SD 12 Cities
Several cities in Senate District 12 were selected to receive grants for traffic signal projects. The money will be used to synchronize traffic lights and to replace traffic signal bulbs with energy-saving LEDs. According to the Comptrollers Office the cities are: Bedford $1.856 million; Fort Worth $750000; North Richland Hills $362500; Grapevine $308000; and Frisco $134400.
Young Conservatives of Texas Name Senator Nelson to Honor Roll
Senate Nelson was the only senator named to the Historic Honor Roll for her career voting record the Young Conservatives of Texas announced. Legislators are scored on a scale from 0 to 100 with points being awarded for each correct vote. YCT strives to choose votes that offer a clear choice between conservatism and liberalism said Tony McDonald Vice Chairman for Legislative Affairs. YCT congratulates the members of the Historic Honor Roll whose career ratings rank above 90 percent. Seven representatives achieved Historic Honor Roll status.
Nursing Educators Name Senator Nelson A Champion of Nursing Education
The Texas Association of Deans and Directors of Professional Nursing Programs honored Senator Nelson for her leadership on behalf of nursing education and funding during the 81st Legislative Session.
