Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Every year since 1954 Americans pause on November 11th to reflect on the high price of freedom.
This Veterans Day is particularly important because of the election that precedes it. If voters approve Proposition 1 totally disabled veterans will be allowed to pass their existing property tax exemptions upon their death to their surviving spouses.
On Tuesday November 8 Texas voters head to the polls to consider 10 new amendments to the state constitution.
Although totally disabled veterans are protected from property taxes while they live this exemption expires upon their death. As a result surviving spouses face economic hardships such as paying costly funeral expenses and covering any remaining health care bills. During this time of grief the surviving spouse is also faced with a dramatic increase in property taxes.
Military spouses are the backbone of our countrys national defense. When our veterans return from combat military spouses continue to serve by assisting with the arduous challenge of transitioning back into home life. That is why I passed legislation allowing spouses of totally disabled veterans who reside in Texas to stay in their homes upon the veterans passing.
There are more than two million veterans in the state of Texas. Almost 25000 veterans with a disability rating of 100 call Texas home.
Your support for Proposition 1 on November 8th or during Early Voting which has already begun is a great way to honor the sacrifices made by their spouses.
