Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Governor Rick Perry signed into law House Bill 5 a major overhaul of Texas public education testing and curriculum requirements. Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio District 26) a member of the Senate Education Committee was deeply involved in the debate that shaped HB 5. Senator Van de Putte issued the following statement upon the bills signing:
I am deeply thankful to Governor Perry for recognizing the hard work that went into this bill. So many thoughtful people - legislators staffers and most importantly concerned parents students and educators - poured their heart into making these badly needed reforms a reality.
While high-stakes testing seemed like the right thing to do when it was introduced parents and educators made it clear to us that 15 end-of-course exams are too many and that the classroom balance had shifted too much toward testing and too far from teaching. Reducing the exams to five will restore that balance.
Im also grateful to my fellow legislators for taking my input on curriculum which will ensure all students start on a path that is rigorous as well as relevant so that Texas students are prepared today for a tomorrow that we cannot begin to imagine.
