Senator Van de Putte Files Legislation to Reduce Plastic Bag Consumption

Published: 12-08-08

width=65(AUSTIN TX)--  On Friday December 5 Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) filed legislation to recycle plastic bags and promote reusable bags.

Senate Bill 338 requires businesses to maintain recycling bins for plastic bags onsite at retail outlets as well as offer customers reasonably priced reusable bags.  The legislation aims to reduce the amount of plastic bags consumed by Texans which wreak havoc on the environment.

While many municipalities have voluntarily entered into plastic bag reduction campaigns and been successful no statewide uniform policy exists.

Although they are convenient these plastic bags are not consistently recycled and end up sitting in landfills.  The time has come for the state to increase measures to protect our environment and reduce costs to maintain municipal and rural water systems said Van de Putte.
