WASHINGTONU.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchinson sent the following letter today urging President Obama to issue a major disaster declaration to help Texas recover from wildfires that continue to threaten the state and to provide aid for those affected by recent wildfires in North Texas.
In light of the recent wildfires that have devastated parts of North Texas Sens. Cornyn and Hutchison are pushing the administration to approve the State of Texas request for a major disaster declaration as a result of wildland fires and make Individual Assistance and Public Assistance (Categories A and B) including direct federal assistance for Callahan Clay Jack Montague Wichita and Young Counties and Hazard Mitigation statewide.

Dear President Obama:
We are writing in support of the request by the State of Texas to declare a major disaster declaration for counties impacted by recent wildfires. Yesterday April 16 2009 the State of Texas requested you to declare a major disaster declaration for counties that have been affected from the wildfires including Callahan Clay Jack Montague Wichita and Young counties.
Wildfires have scorched more than 100000 acres of Northern Texas in the last week alone. The combination of drought and strong winds has proven catastrophic for hundreds of homeowners and businesses. Communities homes and lives have been lost by these devastating fires.
We urge you to expedite the consideration of this request as the declaration is critical to ensuring that important recovery assistance is made available to the residents of Texas who have suffered as a result of these fires. We appreciate your efforts underway to review Texas request in a timely manner and ask that you give it due consideration. You may be certain that we will work with the Administration to aid the victims of this disaster.
