Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas -- As youve probably heard by now
the San Antonio Federal Court has issued a new set of interim election maps. Under this latest plan NuecesCounty will lose a seat in the Texas House of Representatives and will be divided into two seats instead of the current three.
Like many of you I do not agree with this decision since these maps are identical to the original Republican drawn legislative maps. As you may recall those maps were flagged by the Dept. of Justice for eliminating District 33 as a possible
violation of the Voting Rights Act.
I believe that the elimination of District 33 was unjustified. However the new interim maps will most likely be used for this upcoming 2012 election cycle.
Much has been said about
this messy redistricting process and many questions remain unanswered… But one thing we do know is that we can not afford another
2 years of Republican rule in Texas.
Because District 33 has been eliminated I have chosen NOT to seek the newly drawn District 34 seat and will support former State Representative Abel Herrero for that office.
This decision was not easy… Public service is something that runs deep in my family and there is no greater honor or duty than to serve your community but now is not the time for a divided primary. It is crucial that we remain unified for this upcoming election.
In the coming months I look forward to sharing with you some of the exciting projects we will be working on with our new non-profit the MAP of Texas. We will continue to promote positive change and education in our community.
To all my friends family and supporters who throughout the years made many of my dreams possible I thank you. This is just the beginning - our work continues!
