Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas -- The Texas House today concurred with Senate amendments to House Bill 48 sending it to Governor Greg Abbott for approval. This legislation championed for years by Representative Ruth Jones McClendon creates the Tim Cole Exoneration Commission to review wrongful convictions and prevent such convictions from occurring in the future. After the House concurred Speaker Joe Straus released the following statement:
Ruth Jones McClendon makes me proud to be a Member of the Texas House. For years she has committed herself to the cause of justice even when tremendous obstacles were put in her way. Because of Ruths perseverance wrongful convictions will become less frequent in the future and the public will have greater faith in our criminal justice system. Her leadership has just made Texas a better place.
