Split-Screen Debate: Unemployment Rises Obama Says its Evidence of Recovery

At  simultaneous events Romney & Obama quarrel over Jobs Report width=145Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C.  In separate speeches that by happenstance were delivered simultaneously 1000s of miles apart in a split-screen debate over jobs and taxes the two presidential contenders Barack Obama and Mitt Romney effectively quarreled over the significance of the latest jobs report and who would do a better job of keeping taxes down so the economy can grow.   Using the White Houses own metrics of talking about private payroll job gains from the cycle low President Obamas recovery remains in last place among post-World War II recoveries" said Cong. Kevin Brady (R-TX) Vice Chairman of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee commenting on todays Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) employment report. Todays employment report despite a better than expected gain of 172000 private payroll jobs yet again confirms the failure of President Obamas economic policies Brady said. The new unemployment report Mr. Romney said was another hammer-blow to the struggling middle-class families of America." And then he sought to contrast his experience as a leveraged-buyout executive with Mr. Obamas experience in academia. President Obama and Mitt Romney presented starkly different views of the state of the economy and starkly different visions for the way forward.
  • width=123Mr. Obama appeared with families invited to the White House complex to pressure Congress to extend tax cuts for the middle class while letting taxes rise for the wealthy.
  • Mr. Romney visited a trucking business in Las Vegas to make the point that the president does not understand how the private sector works.
Both were responding to a report with mixed news showing 163000 new jobs created last month more than expected but the unemployment rate ticking up to 8.3 percent. I knew when I started in this job that this was going to take some time" Mr. Obama said in his speech. To get there though the president said Congress should renew the Bush-era tax cuts but not on income above $250000 a year. The Senate controlled by Democrats passed a tax extension as Mr. Obama wanted but the House run by Republicans voted to extend all of the Bush-era tax cuts including for the wealthy. They want to give millionaires and billionaires and folks like me tax cuts that we dont need and that the country cant afford even if middle class families have to pick up the tab for it" Mr. Obama said. Those are their priorities. And this week we learned that there are some in the Republican Party who dont want to stop even there." Said Cong. Brady (R-TX) Vice Chair of the Joint Economic Committee Using the Presidents own metrics his recovery lags the average recovery by 4.2 million private jobs. And it lags width=334the pace of the stronger Reagan recovery by 7.3 million. If this recovery had been like the Reagan recovery we would have added 11.8 million private sector jobs instead of the 4.5 million created under Obama." Speaking at the same time on the other side of the country Mr. Romney on Friday slammed Mr. Obama saying he was presiding over an economy that is failing to recover from a devastating recession. The president does not understand how the economy works" he said. He does not understand how the private sector works." To laughter from a crowd of several hundred supporters Mr. Romney said his recipe for renewing the economy is not based on spending years in academics coming up with theories." I know how to do that" he said describing what he said would be his ability to foster job creation. This is not a mystery to me. This is not theory this is practice." The problem is that the Presidents continued insistence on higher taxes more spending more red tape and his government takeover of health care are stifling economic growth and killing job creation" Brady said. Brady called the unemployment rate of 8.3 Another record for the President. For 42 consecutive months weve seen the unemployment rate above 8.0. Without the decline in labor force participation since the unemployment rate peaked at 10.0 in October 2009 the unemployment rate would have risen to 10.1" said Brady.
