State Rep. Alonzo Says Still Work to be Done

By Roberto R. Alonzo Rep. Alonzo Proud of Accomplishments but says: Work Left to be Done width=71AUSTIN TX -- State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo is back home in the district in Dallas after the final gavel of the 81st Regular Session of the Texas Legislature declared sine die or an end to another 140-session in Austin last Monday June 1. After a long session Rep. Alonzo said Texas citizens will be pleased with what he accomplished but there still remains some work to be done. Im proud of our legislative accomplishments during the recently-completed 140-day 81st Regular Session in Austin but theres still some incomplete work left to be done Rep. Alonzo said. For example I am proud to have supported an across-the-board pay raise for our well-deserving teachers correctional officers and other state employees; much-needed school finance reforms and certain school accountability measures that positively impact a students education; increased funding the Texas GRANTS financial aid program for college students; tax relief for small business owners; additional resources to increase our Tier One universities in Texas - especially in the DFW and North Texas regions; hurricane relief; some tuition relief for qualifying college students and military veterans ; funds for electronic textbooks; additional resources to improve our roads and highways and economic infrastructure; and of course the defeat of the voter ID legislation among other key measures said Rep. Alonzo. Generally while there were some positive strides and accomplishments made for Texas families and average hard-working Texans there were also some missed opportunities that the Legislature was not able to address because of a lack of will by some members.texas-politics-flag Among the missed opportunities unfortunately were the legislatures failure to include an additional 80000 Texas children in the CHIP program or Childrens Health Insurance Program; over $500 million in federal dollars that could have been used to address our unemployment insurance program; further tuition relief that has forced more and more low- and middle income students from getting a college education with the skyrocketing tuition costs that continue to go up since deregulation in 2003; much-needed insurance reform; decrease in utility rates; and much-needed Medicaid reforms to assist our poor children and average Texas families. The bottom line is that the session may be over but the work is not complete - there still remains some other work to be done continued Rep. Alonzo.
