State Rep. Gattis Has Eyes Fixed on Senate Seat

By Brad Stutzman  width=83Gattis may run for Dist. 5 position if Ogden steps down The 2010 elections could bring a round of musical chairs to Williamson County politics with District 20 state Rep. Dan Gattis (R-Georgetown) declaring his intention to seek the District 5 state Senate seat currently held by Steve Ogden (R-Bryan) if Ogden retires. That development is already anticipated by Georgetown Republican Milton Rister who last week announced hes organizing an exploratory committee in advance of a contemplated run for Gattis job. Ogden hasnt formally announced his future political intentions and might not do so until after the Texas State Legislatures special session which Gov. Rick Perry will probably schedule for after the July 4 holiday. I would never run against Ogden because were too good of friendS and allies Gattis said this week from his Georgetown law office. If he runs Ill be seeking my seat again. While not directly stating it Gattis made it clear the thinks Ogden will retire and that will clear the way for both his candidacy and Risters. width=101Ogden - a U.S. Naval Academy graduate - has represented the 14-county Senate District 5 since 1997. Before that hed served since 1991 in the Texas House of Representatives. Gattis - a former prosecuting attorney whos been in the state House since 1992 - acknowledged it would be a promotion of sorts if voters moved him from the 150-member House to the 31-member Senate. I think its potentially a move up Gattis said. Your ability to have a bigger influence over all the issues is greater in the Senate than the House just because of the numbers 31 vs. 150. While Williamson County is split in the state House of Representatives - between Gattis and Dist. 52 state Rep. Diana Maldonado (D-Round Rock) - the entire county is in state Senate District 5. That would be a political advantage Gattis said since hes from Williamson County and its the largest county in the district. The next largest county - Brazos - is home to Bryan-College Station where Gattis received his undergraduate education at Texas A&M University. The opportunity to represent my home county where I grew up and Bryan-College Station as an Aggie is a dream job to me Gattis said. Rister meanwhile last week issued a press release stating hes forming a committee to consider a run at the job Gattis now holds. Read more HERE *This story is from www.RRLeader.com
