House Bill 1533 the Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act Texas State Rep. Jeff Leach has taken a substantial step in the fight to protect Texans 2nd Amendment rights and encourage lawful gun ownership. Leachs bill
establishes Texas Independence Day (March 2) as a tax-free holiday exempting individuals purchase of firearms and hunting supplies in the State of Texas from sales taxes.
Said Leach while filing the bill Texas must take the lead in the fight against the federal governments attempts to infringe on our Second Amendment Rights.
The Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act encourages and incentivizes lawful gun ownership by allowing law abiding citizens hunters and sportsmen the opportunity to save money on firearm and hunting equipment benefitting Texas taxpayers and small business owners and spurring economic growth.
As we fight against the federal governments overreach there is no more appropriate day to instate this tax-free holiday than on Texas Independence Day.
Under this legislation the following items will be eligible for tax exemption on Texas Independence Day:
- Shotguns rifles pistols revolvers and other handguns
- Gun cleaning supplies gun cases gun safes and optics
- Ammunition
- Archery equipment
- Hunting stands blinds and decoys
House Bill 1533 is endorsed and strongly supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA).

While bolstering our Texas economy this common-sense legislation goes a long way toward promoting our Second Amendment freedoms."

Rep. Leach serves on the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence the House Committee on Urban Affairs and the House Committee on Rules and Resolutions. He also serves on the Texas House Republican Caucus Policy Committee. Leach represents portions of Plano Allen Richardson and Dallas in Collin County.
