Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Despite the push by proponents of stricter gun laws the amendments during two days of Senate debate & voting
that received the most support were not the ones that tightened restrictions on weapons and-or purchases
but the ones that loosened them.
- 57 Senators voted Wednesday to essentially nullify state laws that prohibit carrying concealed weapons.
- 56 Senators voted to restore gun ownership rights to Veterans who have had them taken away.
- Only 54 voted for a compromise plan to expand background checks for gun buyers. (60 votes were required to proceed to a yea or nay vote.)
- 46 Senators voted to ban high-capacity magazines and
- Only 40 voted to renew a ban on certain military-style rifles.
While supporters of the plans attempting to weaken the rights of gun owners or purchasers including the Majority Leader Harry Reid vowed to keep the issue alive the consensus on Capitol Hill was to … well just move on.
Next on the Senates agenda? Preparing to take up a bill that would allow states to collect sales tax for items sold online.
