Texas Insider Report: AUSTINTexas I am honored S
peaker Straus has asked me to lead the Sunset Commission discussions in preparation of the 85th Legislative Session and look forward to working with my colleagues from both chambers in the coming months ensuring these agencies
meet their mission effectively and efficientlysaid
State Rep. Larry Gonzales (left R-Round Rock) after Texas House Speaker Joe Straus (right R-San Antonio) named Gonzales as Chairman of the prestigious
Sunset Advisory Commission.
The Sunset Review process in Texas is the regular assessment of the continuing need for a state agency or program to exist. The current Sunset Review cycle
is comprised of 24 state agencies including the Texas Department of Transportation the Railroad Commission and the Texas Medical Board.
These appointees have a very important job" said Speaker Straus.
I am confident that their review and recommendations will help state agencies serve taxpayers better. Their work will also help the House continue to make state government more transparent and efficient."
While standard legislative oversight is concerned with agency compliance with legislative policies Sunset starts with a more basic question:
Do the agencys functions continue to be needed?

Sunset Review has always been about more than just limiting the size of government. The process creates a unique opportunity and powerful incentive for the Legislature and stakeholders to look closely at each agency and make key improvements to how state government works.
As the Subcommittee Chairman for the House Appropriations Committee which writes the budgets for most of the agencies up for Sunset review this cycle I have a unique perspective and opportunity to ensure the state of Texas operates in a manner which reinforces our commitment to service while balancing our fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers of Texas said Gonzales.
Chairman Gonzales is serving his 3rd term in the Texas House of Representatives representing
House District 52 which is comprised of
the cities of Round Rock Hutto Taylor and parts of Georgetown.
