My colleagues and I in Congress have taken decisive action against North Korea and passed the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016.
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. This week Congress sent H.R. 757 the
North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 to President Obama for his signature. North Korea has threatened our homeland our military bases and our allies while continuing to develop its nuclear weapons program. Each of these actions must be taken seriously. However the Obama Administration continues to pursue strategic patience" in response to North Koreas hostility.
President Obamas strategic patience approach to dealing with the Kim regime has given them the time and ability to build nuclear warheads that fit on its ballistic missiles. These missiles have the range and capability to strike the continental United States. On Sunday North Korea tested one of these ballistic missiles and launched a satellite into orbit. This satellite flew over Silicon Valley in California the site of Super Bowl 50 roughly an hour after the game ended. Sundays launch is just the latest in a series of alarming actions taken by North Korea that the Obama Administration has failed to adequately respond to.
My colleagues and I in Congress have taken decisive action against North Korea and passed the
North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016. This important bill would further economically isolate North Korea from the international community in response to their broader illicit activities. President Obama has not imposed any meaningful sanctions on North Korea since he was inaugurated. This has allowed Kim Jong-un to continue threatening the United States with no real consequences. The
North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 will hold North Korea responsible its actions and block access to hard currency and goods that could be used for its weapons program. The bill also requires enhanced inspections of ships and aircraft and holds North Korean leaders accountable for cybersecurity attacks and human rights violations.
It should be no surprise that North Korea is bolder than ever. President Obamas major foreign policy achievement" over the past few years is the disastrous nuclear deal he reached with Iran the worlds leading state sponsor of terrorism. I strenuously opposed the presidents Iran deal and I voted against it. Iran financed terror groups that were directly responsible for the deaths of U.S. service members in Iraq. I do not support the presidents deal to release over $100 billion in frozen Iranian assets. Secretary Kerry has acknowledged that some of this money will end up financing further terrorist activity.
The United States cannot continue the weak foreign policy of the past seven years. North Korea must be held accountable for their hostility. By sending the
North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016 to the president this week Congress has shown that the United States will take action to stand with our allies and keep America safe.
