Tea Party Letter from Sen. Cornyn

width=143Fellow Texans I send greetings to all those gathered at Tax Day Tea Parties across the state of Texas.  You are part of a nationwide grass-roots movement created by the people not by a political campaign.  You are using the social networking technologies of the 21st Century to advance many of the ideals that founded our great Nation.  You are reminding us of the timeless truth articulated by Ronald Reagan that we are a nation that has a government not the other way around. Today your government in Washington wants to take even more of your money.  The President and Democrats in Congress want to raise net taxes by more than $1.4 trillion over the next decade.  Many of these taxes will fall on small businesses which are the engines of job growth in our economy.  Many of these taxes will impact charities and faith-based groups which depend on individual donations to help feed the hungry and heal the sick.  Many of these taxes will fall on our children as they struggle to repay a burden of public debt that is unprecedented in our history. These higher taxes will delay our economic recovery and strain even more family budgets. American families and small businesses will be forced to spend less so that the federal government can spend more.  Between Inauguration Day and Tax Day Congress has spent more than we have for Iraq Afghanistan and in response to Hurricane Katrina combined.  We have authorized more spending for bailouts in the last year than we have spent in inflation-adjusted terms to fund all our wars for more than 200 years.  Across America millions of our countrymen are frustrated at all this taxing spending and borrowing.  Yet we in Texas can also offer a more positive alternative.  Our state has fared better than most during this economic crisis because we have adopted wise policies to grow our economy.  We have reformed our legal system.  We have adopted common-sense regulation.  We have protected the right to work.  And most importantly we have kept taxes low.  State and local taxes in the Lone Star State are only the 43rd highest in the nation according to the Tax Foundation.  Low taxes are a big reason why many parts of our state are still adding jobs.  Only three of the top 39 job markets in the nation added jobs last year and all three are right here in Texas. I salute all Texans gathered today to exercise their rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.  I share your frustration at the increasing tax burden on our people.  And I pledge to continue working to help Washington learn from the experience of the great state of Texas. Sincerely John Cornyn United States Senator
