Texas Child Protective Services Looking to Expand Powers

width=150AUSTIN - The Travis County Republican Party joins several organizations in urging Texas Governor Rick Perry to veto SB 1440 a bill which would allow Texas Child Protective Services to enter homes take children subject them to interviews and investigations without a court hearing or notice to the parent or even showing good cause. We urge Governor Perry to protect the fundamental rights of parents to guide and care for their children said Dr. Rosemary Edwards TCRP chairman. In our view the bill gives CPS more power than the police and allows CPS employees to gain access to records or transport children for questioning without parents knowledge or consent.width=79 We strongly object as well to the fact that SB 1440 would deny parents a hearing before court orders are signed against them obliterating the Constitutional notion of due process. Child abuse and neglect is an awful crime but we have also seen numerous abuses on the part of government agencies in prosecuted wrongfully perceived cases. SB 1440 does not balance these concerns and should be scrapped until something better can be devised. A press conference calling for the Governors veto will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday June 10 at the State Capitol Steps.
