Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announces the city of Carrollton is the first local government entity to achieve specific transparency goals through the Comptrollers Transparency Stars program.
Hegar will be in Carrollton today to recognize the city for its efforts in the area of traditional financial transparency which include placing financial documents such as annual reports budgets and check registers online.
Im proud to recognize Carrolltons efforts to provide taxpayers with the tools they need to better understand and analyze financial information" Hegar said. The city has shown a commitment to opening its books to the public by making financial information available on its website in easily accessible and user-friendly formats."
The city of Andrews also demonstrated significant transparency providing an easy-to-follow financial summary with explanations of recent trends earning it an award in traditional finances. The Troup and Hull-Daisetta school districts also earned recognition for traditional finances.
In March Hegar announced the launch of the Transparency Stars program which recognizes government entities that provide easy online access to important financial data.
The program allows local governments to apply for recognition in up to five areas. After receiving an initial star for traditional financial transparency local entities can go on to apply in other areas for a total of five stars:
The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) noted the Comptrollers new program in its
annual evaluation of states transparency efforts.
