width=65Texas Insider sat down with Representative Myra Crownover (R-Denton) who chairs the Stimulus Subcommittee for the House Appropriations Committee. Her Subcommittee will oversee Texas share of the Federal Stimulus money now totaling over $17 billion. Crownover believes that handling this money with transparency and accountability is a sacred responsibility that government has to Texas taxpayers. Crownovers message to Texans? Be cautious about this stimulus money and its long-term effects. This funding is both a tremendous challenge and opportunity" said Crownover And theres risks it doesnt come without big risks. I think Texas is a unique state were an independent state. I think we could tell D.C. how to run things and it would be a huge improvement. We dont want Washington D.C. telling us how to run the state of Texas because were doing very well thank you." Crownover continued sharing that many Texas taxpayers are concerned about the effects the stimulus money will have on Texas specifically the accountability and oversight needed for such a large amount of funding. She understands constituents are very passionate about this money Everyone that comes to me is very apprehensive about the potential for fraud and abuse" Crownover stated. Its the people that are concerned with what this is doing to our nation and to our state. This is taxpayers money but its our children and our grandchildren who will be paying these taxes. So we have a very sacred obligation to get it right. Some people just think Oh hallelujah money its falling from the sky like manna from heaven. They forget to see the cycle its taxpayer money." Just as important and often forgotten is that many of the specific federal directives are still unknown. Crownover cautions that the whole situation is a process. Were trying to stay on schedule but there are still some unknowns from the federal government. We need to make sure we know the deal were cutting. We are not going to cut a bad deal for the state of Texas just because the feds offer it to us. Each week well know more (about these directives) than we do the week before. There are still holes we have to address and learn. We have to become educated and up to speed on everything. There are things that we dont know and cant address at this point but we will." Crownover ended by emphasizing The setup is in place and it works and were going to work through the process and make this a win for the state of Texas."
