CAMP MABRY- Austin Texas (November 7 2008) The Texas Military Forces Museum located on Camp Mabry in Austin is proud to present Close Assault 1944 on November 8-9 2008. The special living history program will commemorate Veterans Day and will focus on the experiences of G.I.’s who served in the Texas National Guard’s famed 36th Infantry Division during World War II. Admission to the program and the 45000-square foot Texas Military Forces Museum is free.
The museum will conduct Close Assault 1944 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The program includes displays of equipment uniforms vehicles and weapons used by American troops in the European Theater between 1942 and 1945.
Some of the most famous weapons of the war will be demonstrated including the Thompson sub-machine gun the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and the M1 Garand.
At the end of each program the museum’s Living History Detachment will recreate a combined arms attack on a German held village using small arms automatic weapons an operational M3 Halftrack and M4 Sherman tank.
Bleacher seating souvenirs and concessions will be available to the public. In addition a military book sale will take place inside the museum. Pony rides will also be available for a small fee.
The museum is open on Wednesday through Sunday each week 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Entrance to Camp Mabry is off 35th Street west of MoPac. All adults must show a photo ID to enter the post and all vehicles must have proof of valid insurance.
