Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas This week I filed Senate Bill 521 the Texas Parental Control Accountability Act which would prohibit abortion providers and their affiliates from teaching sex education and / or providing family planning instruction in Texas schools. Additionally this legislation empowers parents by requiring parental consent fourteen days before a student can take part in any sex education and /or family planning instruction which is not taught by school faculty of staff.
State Representative Jeff Leach authored a companion bill (House Bill 1057) in the Texas House of Representatives which includes joint authors State Representatives Jodie Laubenberg Geanie Morrison Scott Turner and James White. Senator Eddie Lucio. Jr. and Senator Donna Campbell M.D. are joint-authors for SB 521. The list of support in both the Texas Senate and Texas House continues to grow.
Parents should know with whom their children interact at public schools who is influencing their decision making and what information is provided. This legislation strengthens the role of parents and allows them to control the sensitive and personal information provided by a third party to their children.
