Texas Students Honored with U.S. Service Academy Appointments

I want to congratulate them for what they have already accomplished in their lives and support them as they move forward with their education. They width=71are beginning a time of dedicated learning and service to our nation" said Cong. Joe Barton (R-Ennis/Arlington) while celebrating the appointments of eight local students to the U.S. service academies and prep schools.   Academic and athletic excellence has made this one of the strongest classes ever put forward by Rep. Barton 93 from around the 6th District asked for applications but only 7 made it into an academy and one was selected to a prep school. In order to gain admission to one of the service academies which include the U.S. Air Force Academy U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy at West Point students must first receive a nomination from a Member of Congress.  Each of the 8 appointees went through a comprehensive interview process to receive Rep. Bartons nomination which was then sent to the academies to determine who would receive appointments. Each of the U.S. Service Academies plays a key role in developing many of our nations finest leaders.  These students are the next generation and they are being prepared for the future at some of the best universities in the nation" said Rep. Barton. Many of the appointees were honored by the Congressman at town hall meetings around the 6th District over the past two weeks. Below is more information about each of these distinguished young people: width=144John Paul Canclini of Arlington will attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall. He is currently a senior at Mansfield High School where he is active in the classroom athletics his church and the community. John Paul is an excellent student with a 4.0 GPA and is ranked 3rd in his class of more than 450. He is in the National Honor Society the Key Club and a member of the Robotics and Academic Decathlon teams. He is an Eagle Scout and a championship swimmer. John Paul is also a member of the Youth Ministry Council and is an accomplished fiddle player performing at the Texas State Fair and Ft. Worth Parade of Lights. Riley Curnutt of Arlington will attend the United States Air Force Academy in the fall. He is currently a senior at Arlington High School where is has starred on the wrestling mat and in academics. Riley is a member of the National Honor Society Key Club and was named as a College Board AP Scholar. The faculty at Arlington High School also recognized him with a Student Achievement Award. He is a three year captain of the wrestling team and this year placed 3rd at the UIL State Tournament. Riley is also a 6th generation resident of Arlington. Caleb Gunnels of Fairfield will attend the United States Military Academy. He is a senior at Fairfield High School where he has had a distinguished academic extra-curricular and athletic career. He is involved with the Inter Act Club Echo Club (which he co-founded) Science Club and LD Debate. Caleb is also active in the community where has helped with American Cancer Society Relay For Life FHS Recycling Project Toys For Tots and the FCA speaker for Fields of Faith." He was also received District Honors in football baseball and track. Caleb was also named to the All-State Academic Football Team. Gavin Hawbaker of Arlington will attend the United State Naval Academy in the fall. He is currently a senior at Arlington High School where he does his best to live by the quote by Albert Einstein What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail? Gavin is a marathon runner and captain of the football team. He is also active in the community and extracurricular activities including Key Club National Honor Society Habitat for Humanity Mission Arlington volunteer and mentoring students at Key Elementary in math and science. Gavin has received the Arlington Optimist Student of the Year Award and Bobby Bragan Young Writers Award. Allison Hunt of Ft. Worth will attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall. She is currently a senior at Ft. Worth Country Day where she has shined in athletics and academics. She enjoys chemistry and also competed on the schools swim cross country and track teams. David Johnson of Mexia will attend the United States Military Academy Prep School in the fall. He is currently a senior at Teague High School. He is a leader in sports and in the classroom. David plays football and basketball for the school and plays in the band. He is also involved in a long list of activities including National Honor Society Student Council Spanish Club Spanish Honor Society One Act Play Extemporaneous Speaking U.I.L. and Current Events and Issues U.I.L. James McMasters of Arlington will attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall. He is currently a senior at Mansfield Legacy High School where he has grown into an accomplished athlete student and member of the community.  James has been a member of the swimming team for four years and qualified width=157regionals several times. He has served as vice president of both the National Honor Society and Key Club and is a member of the robotic club. He also has many unique talents including riding a unicycle and playing ukulele. Haylie Stanat of Arlington will attend the United State Air Force Academy in the fall. She is currently a senior at Lamar High School and has left the competition in her wake in the swimming pool. Haylies12 year swimming career culminated  in 2011 and 2012 when she was All-State in the 50 meter event (2011) and  100 freestyle and 200 free relays (2012). She is also a very accomplished student.
