From Congresswoman Kay Granger
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. In February the President released his federal budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2012 claiming his plan will help tackle our national debt and deficit. To help promote his proposal the Presidents internal budget agency released a slanted analysis of his budget blueprint stating that over 10 years the deficit would be stabilized" and that his budget will add $7.2 trillion to the deficit over that period.
However when the objective nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analyzed the Presidents budget it found very different results.
CBO concluded last week this budget proposal would actually add $9.5 trillion to the deficit over $2 trillion more than the President promised. This is a significant discrepancy and does not give me a lot of hope that the President is serious about making progress on our debt problem.
If we are serious about addressing our debt and deficits we have to start by agreeing on the numbers. There is no longer room to allow politics to influence how we assess the size and scope of our problem.
The House is currently holding hearings to examine the Presidents FY 2012 budget proposal. We have to make tough choices.
In order to make progress we need partners in the Senate and in the White House. While we may disagree on what we should cut we all need to be seriously committed to tackling our problems.
As we move through the budget process I will continue to keep you updated.
