Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Its hard to believe that June is already here. Our community is busy preparing for the season and the kids are excited to be out of school but our community stopped in sadness when we learned of the deaths of four of our local firefighters: Robert BeBee Ann Sullivan Matthew Renaud and Robert Garner. Our state and many across the nation mourned with us on Wednesday at their memorial service at Reliant Stadium. We are saddened that theyre gone but we thank the good Lord that such people ever lived.

I was honored to speak at the Memorial Day service at the Houston Veterans National Cemetery and to remember the service men and women that lost their lives fighting for our nation. We will always be thankful for their service and sacrifice. This Memorial Day and always we remembered.
Contrary to what the Department of Homeland Security says the border is not secure.In the House this week I introduced H.R. 2220 the *the SMART Border Act of 2013*a robust border protection strategy that provides the tools needed for the U.S. to achieve operational control of our southern border. The SMART Border Act would give Congress not the Administration the authority to determine when operational control of our border has been achieved. I also introduced an amendment to the DHS Appropriations Act to strengthen communications infrastructure along the border helping border residents communicate with law enforcement in times of danger. The amendment reallocated funding from a different account (no additional spending) and passed the House unanimously.
In Washington I was pleased to see several constituents in town including Mike Nguyen Viet Nguyen An Phong Vo Thao Nguyen and Cindy Dinh who participated in a *Vietnamese-American Meet-up in the House.* I spoke before their conference and spoke about my support for the Vietnamese Human Rights Act (H.R. 1897). I was also pleased to meet Coryne Levine a senior at Kingwood Park High School who is finishing up an internship in Washington.
Lastly Rep. Janice Hahn (D-CA) and I as co-chairs of the Congressional PORTS Caucus met with outgoing Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to discuss how the U.S. can stay globally competitive by investing in our ports and maintaining port infrastructure. Did you know that half of Houstons revenue comes from the Port of Houston? Our port and ports across the nation- play a vital role in our national economy and our national security.
My grandmother used to say love never comes with black eyes or bruises. This week I spoke to victim advocates and service providers at the National Network to End Domestic Violences Congressional Breakfast. I spoke about the importance of the Violence Against Women Act and the Victims of Crime Act. My grandmother used to say love never comes with black eyes or bruises. Our nation must be concerned about what takes place in our families and understand that the effects of domestic violence go far beyond the relationship of the two people involved. I also thanked the victim advocates (pictured on right) for the important work that they do.
