By State Rep. Raul Torres candidate for the Texas SenateTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas For many July Fourth represents a day of special family time eating BBQ playing at the park or swimming at the beach.
But July 4th means much more than family fun. July 4th represents the celebration of the birth of our nation the greatest nation ever formed by God on this Earth.
There is a legend that has been handed down to us for hundreds of years that tell us what really happened that day when America was born. The story goes like this. On that day in a small building in the city of Philadelphia 56 honorable men gathered together to debate the idea of declaring our independence from Great Britain.
Legend says that the walls echoed with the words treason the gallows the headsmans axe throughout the long day.
Then came a moment when a man rose and spoke with great passion has he delivered his plea to the other men that were present. He reminded them of the grievances that had brought them to this moment and finally his with his voice falling he said
They may turn every tree into a gallows every hole into a grave and yet the words of that parchment can never die. To the mechanic in the workshop they will speak hope; to the slave in the mines freedom. Sign that parchment. Sign if the next moment the noose is around your neck for that parchment will be the textbook of freedom the Bible of the rights of man forever.
The 56 delegates rushed forward and immediately signed that document. When they turned to thank him he was not to be found and no one knew who he was or how he had come in or gone out through the locked and guarded doors. Well that is the story according to the legend.
History tells us for certain that 56 men did on that day pledge their lives their fortunes and their sacred honor for the cause of liberty. In the coming days months and years after the document was signed some lost their lives in the war most lost all of their fortunes and all of them preserved their sacred honor.
Because of the bravery of these men they gave birth to a new nation. Today America is home to over 300 million people from all over the world. There is not other nation like America. She is admired for her beauty and abundant resources but hated by many for her freedom and liberty.
The birth of our nation is the only true moral revolution in all history. For the first time in human history a nation was formed based on the principles that man is born with certain God-given rights and that government has no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people.
This Independence Day may the Lord bless you and may God always bless America.
Thank you and Together Lets Move Texas Forward.
