Student Leadership Advisory Council Legislative Update I recently launched the formation of the House District 67 Student Leadership Advisory Council (SLAC) a unique opportunity for high school students within our community to engage in the legislative process and obtain a hands-on education of the role and inner-workings of Texas state government. Throughout this program my staff and I have provided these select students with a special opportunity to understand the importance and intrinsic value of civic engagement and public service while offering a venue to better understand the nuts and bolts of legislative process at the state level. Specifically these SLAC students were recently charged with submitting their own legislative ideas that they believe will most positively impact our state. In response I am proud to announce that I have filed two pieces of legislation on their behalf that work to improve public education in Texas.- House Bill 1404 creates the formation of a Special Education Services Evaluation Committee" that is charged with evaluating the compliance of Texas Independent School Districts (ISDs) with current laws and regulations related to special education services. The committee is also charged with issuing legislative recommendations to the 85th Legislature.
- House Bill 1664 - a common-sense fix that would allow ISDs the opportunity to continue exempting certain high-performing students from final examinations a practice currently in place at the discretion of local ISDs without fear of losing state funding based on daily attendance.
