The grant will be used to train or upgrade the skills of 300 truck drivers. Upon completion of training participants will receive an average hourly wage of $15.98. The trucking consortium includes Teamsters Union TransAm Trucking CRST International and Cadbury Schweppes Bottling Group.
“This joint effort of the Texas Workforce Commission and El Centro will provide opportunities for people to gain the education and skills training they need to become gainfully employed productive members of the community” state Sen. Royce West said. “It shows what can be accomplished by working together. I applaud this public-private collaboration between TWC El Centro College and our local industry partners in working together to help create a stronger workforce and a stronger Texas.”

Job-Training Grant
In Fiscal Year 2006 Self-Sufficiency Fund grants created or upgraded 2564 jobs which paid an average hourly wage of $10.24 upon completion of the training. The grants assisted 42 Texas employers with their customized training needs. More than $6.2 million has been appropriated to the Self-Sufficiency Fund for the 2008-09 biennium.
