Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas More than 1100 Texas middle and high school students will display their outstanding projects at the 2013 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) continues its commitment to the success of tomorrows workforce by co-sponsoring the event for the 12th consecutive year. The fair which is being hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) begins on Tuesday March 26 and culminates with an awards presentation on Friday March 29 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.
Each year we are excited to see the ingenuity of these amazing students and are proud to lend our support for this prestigious event" said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar who will address the students at the awards ceremony. This fair encourages students to pursue science technology engineering and math (STEM) endeavors that help them acquire high demand skills."
Dr. Edwin Barea-Rodriguez a professor and chair of the UTSA Department of Biology will deliver the keynote address to the students at Fridays awards presentation which will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Dr. Barea-Rodriguez was one of 40 educators nationwide selected as a Vision and Change Leadership Fellow for the Partnership for Undergraduate Life Sciences Education. The fellows are charged with identifying ways to improve undergraduate life sciences education.
The ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair is officially sanctioned by the Society for Science & the Public the annual host of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Awards will be presented to students in 17 project categories in each of two divisions.
Winners from the ExxonMobil science fairs senior division will qualify for the Intel ISEF competition in Phoenix in May and will also earn a spot at the Texas Governors Science and Technology Champions Academy a weeklong residential summer camp also sponsored by TWC which will be held this summer at South Texas College in McAllen.
Fair entries will be on display in Exhibit Hall-B of the convention center and will be judged throughout the day on Thursday March 28. More information about the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair is available online at www.emtsef.org.
