U.S. Closes Two Border Crossings After Mexican Gun Battle

Cong. Lamar Smith others question Obama Administrations deportation efforts width=152Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas For the sake of public safety U.S. authorities temporarily shut down two international bridge crossings connecting Eagle Pass Texas to Piedras Negras in Coahuila Mexico due to several gun battles between Mexican military forces and drug traffickers.   According to Mexican news reports the U.S. State Department requested the shutdown in response to a series of gun battles involving rifles and rocket grenade launchers.   The bridges remained shut from approximately 9 p.m. on March 6 and 8 a.m. the following day. Media account from both sides of the border revealed that the traffickers used an 18-wheeler engulfed in fire as a road block approximately a quarter-mile from one of the bridges and that one female police officer and at least six members of the Mexican military were wounded as a result of the battle. Eagle Pass Police Chief Tony Castaneda said the gun battles were not out of the norm" and that the bridges were closed to prevent the criminals from fleeing and entering the U.S. to escape because many of them do have the right to enter by means of a passport." 32 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FOUND IN TEXAS STASH HOUSE Border Patrol agents local police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested 32 illegal immigrants and two suspected smugglers in an unfurnished mobile home without electricity on Wednesday. Of those arrested 27 were Mexican and the remaining five were from El Salvador they will be processed and deported. Illegal immigrants are often held in homes just across the U.S.-Mexico border for days until the next leg width=224of their journey is arranged. $32 MILLION FACILITY OFFERS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS STATE-OF-THE-ART AMENITIES   The enforcement of immigration law has become even more of a joke with a new state-of-the-art detention center opening in Karnes City Texas as part of Obamas kinder and gentler approach to enforcing immigration laws. The new 608-bed grassy compound southeast of San Antonio offers inmates (only adult men who present minimal safety concerns or flight risk) a salad bar a library with Internet access cable TV and indoor gym with basketball courts and soccer fields. And so these poor illegal immigrants do not feel any sort of criminal stigma for breaking our laws and getting caught unarmed resident advisors" will patrol the grounds in stylish polo shirts and khakis. The resort was designed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of the Obama administrations effort to improve conditions for those with deportation cases pending review with the main goals being to give detainees more freedom of movement easier access to lawyers and medical care as well as family visits. Two more similar centers are planned for Crete Illinois and Southwest Ranches in southern Florida. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and other critics in Congress charge that the Obama administration is coddling illegal immigrant width=164being deported and wasting tax dollars to do it. Other opponents to the state-of-the-art retreats include amnesty advocates claiming the private ownership of the facilities will encourage the owners to skimp on quality" in order to maximize profit. Of course all this could be avoided if illegal immigrants were simply booked a plane or bus ticket south of the border to while away their time at their own expense while their case is pending review. MISSISSIPPI LAWMAKERS PASS ANTI-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION LAW   Mississippi House members voted 70-47 for a bill Thursday that will crack down on illegal immigration by enabling police to check the immigration status of individuals arrested.  House leaders stripped the most controversial provisions of the bill before the vote which is expected to pass the Republican-controlled state Senate and move onto the governors desk for a likely signing. Opponents of the bill were successful in removing a provision requiring schools to count illegal immigrants before the bill went for the House vote though they still claim the measure is racist and would shatter families while reinforcing stereotypes of Mississippians. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Andy Gipson denied their claims saying Its about the rule of law." Gipson also said he tried to craft a bill that would survive legal challenges and not punish acts of charity. DHS FINALIZING BIOMETRIC TRACKING SYSTEM FOR ANYONE LEAVING THE COUNTRY...   The Department of Homeland Security is expected to present to Congress within weeks" their plan for a biometric data system to track who is leaving the country and when a measure which has been sought before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Since 2001 36 people who overstayed visas have been convicted of terrorism related charges. Still the Obama administration does not consider deporting individuals whose only offense is overstaying a visa a priority. Some width=250estimates suggest that as many as half of the illegal immigrant population are here because they overstayed visas. John Cohen the departments deputy terrorism coordinator in a meeting with the House Homeland Security committee earlier this month did not discuss the cost or its application to tracking illegal immigrants a main portion of whom overstay visas. However Cohen did say the departments report should address these details.
