Alonzo Scholarships Friday Nov 4  width=71TexasInsider Report: AUSTIN Texas On Friday November 4 2011 State Rep. Alonzo took part in a special luncheon at the University of North Texas- Dallas Campus where certificates were presented to the 2011-12 recipients of the Alonzo Scholars Bilingual Education/ESL Programs. Among the 30 recipients were 14 scholars from the UNT-Dallas campus and 16 scholars from the UNT-Denton campus respectively.  The program which was initially passed by the 78th Texas Legislature in 2003 to provide tuition assistance and loan forgiveness as incentives for college students to pursue certification programs in bilingual or ESL education. has provided over $1.5 million dollars to over 125 teachers gaining certification in this specialty of teaching. Since its initial funding the Alonzo Scholars Program has received much praise from both the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) and the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) because of its success. Both organizations continue to encourage its replication in other parts of the state and nation. In addition to Rep. Alonzo and the scholarship recipients also in attendance at the ceremony were a number of faculty and college administrators from both the UNT-Dallas and Denton campuses as well a representative from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) which is the grant-awarding agency.
