Update: Calls and E-mails are Working. Keep it Up!

Yesterday I focused on the immigration debate in the Senate and lamented the state of the Republican Party. Some of our Republican officials seem to hold their own base in contempt and they are continuing to pursue the illegal immigration issue from a position that is counter to the will of the American people.

Fortunately I never have to feel down about the state of grassroots conservatives. We know our positions and we hold to them. We are also willing to put our beliefs into action. The Senate and White House are getting the message… now is the time to keep it up!
Tuesday’s vote to renew debate on the amnesty bill in the Senate came as a shock to many people. We had fought hard to kill the bill several weeks earlier and our efforts produced results. With the resurrection of the bill on Tuesday it was only natural to feel like the fight may be lost but it isn’t. Grassroots conservatives are resilient. We fight back… and our messages are getting through.

Our calls letters and e-mails are making a difference once again! It shouldn’t take a full court press to get the attention of our Republican legislators but unfortunately that seems to be the case. However we have the will and energy to get the job done. Here is some evidence that it’s working yet again:

National Review is reporting that the next cloture vote is “more likely to fail.”

Tonight that source says of tomorrow’s second more critical cloture vote: “Good chance cloture will fail. If it passes it will be a razor-thin margin. More likely to fail.” Things are still fluid and could look different in the morning but that’s the way it seems at 10 p.m. tonight.

The Washington Post is reporting that the amnesty bill “appears imperiled again.”

The Senate yesterday turned back a series of amendments from both parties aimed at substantially altering controversial immigration legislation but the bill shed supporters as it became mired in procedural problems that left backers concerned about its prospects.

Bloomberg News is reporting that the fate of the bill seems “in doubt over Senate defections.”

The fate of U.S. immigration legislation was cast into doubt when at least six senators who helped revive the proposed overhaul said they either oppose or are leaning against a move to permit a vote on final passage. …

Republicans Richard Burr of North Carolina and Christopher Bond of Missouri and Democrat Ben Nelson of Nebraska said they oppose permitting a vote on final passage. Virginia Democrat Jim Webb and Republicans John Ensign of Nevada and Pete Domenici of New Mexico said they were leaning that way.

South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint released a statement on Wednesday which points to a critical loophole in the amnesty bill:

According to the Congressional Research Service the new Senate immigration bill contains a major loophole in border security. Supporters of the bill say it provides $4.4 billion in immediate mandatory spending for border enforcement but according to the CRS analysis the funds could also be used immediately to implement the amnesty provisions in the bill.

“Not only can this money be used for things other then border security and enforcement it looks like another backdoor trick to promote amnesty” said Senator DeMint. “If Congress appropriates money later this year for the border the money provided in this bill will turn into a slush fund the Administration can use to ensure illegal immigrants are legalized.”

We are very close to stopping this bill! Let’s keep up the pressure! Please waste no time… contact the Senate and President Bush right now and encourage your friends and colleagues to do the same.
