SAN ANTONIO-- Today Senator Leticia Van de Putte and Representative Joe Farias were joined by local and Rio Grande Valley veterans groups to show their support for Proposition 8.
Proposition 8 would authorize the state to contribute state funds for the establishment maintenance and operation of a veterans hospital anywhere else in the state. Currently there are approximately 1.7 million veterans living in Texas and many of these veterans rely on veterans hospitals for medical treatment. Yet there are only nine veterans hospitals located across the state in Houston Temple Waco Bonham Dallas Kerrville San Antonio Amarillo and Big Spring.
This proposed constitutional amendment is especially important for our veterans who reside in places like Brownsville and Wichita Falls who must travel several hours to seek inpatient care from a veterans hospital.
Proposition 8 is a chance for Texans to help speed up efforts to bring a veterans hospital to the Valley and ensure all Texas veterans have access to critical veterans health care said Senator Van de Putte.
South Texas has one of the highest per capita levels of veterans in the nation. The estimated 100000 veterans in South Texas are sometimes forced to drive up to 250 miles to San Antonio for inpatient medical care.
