DALLAS TEXAS ... April 7 2008 ... Waste Control Specialists LLC (“WCS”) today announced it has begun airing radio and television advertising in the Permian Basin as part of its continuing policy to keep the public fully informed about operations at its facility in western Andrews County.
Since beginning operation more than 10 years ago Waste Control Specialists has enjoyed great local and regional support because we have made every effort to inform residents about our ongoing activities and our future plans. The radio and television ads that are now airing are the latest step in that ongoing educational campaign said WCS President Rodney Baltzer.
The additional licenses WCS is seeking from state regulators which would allow on-site disposal of byproduct and low-level radioactive waste are the most significant steps we have taken to date. In the spirit of full disclosure the license applications are available to the public on our web site: www.wcstexas.com Baltzer said.
The purpose of the advertising is to educate the community about our operations and the license applications and to make anyone who is interested well aware of where more information is available Baltzer said.
The WCS facility in Andrews County Texas is currently licensed for the processing storage and disposal of a broad range of hazardous and toxic industrial waste and the processing and storage of low-level and mixed low-level radioactive waste. WCS may also dispose of certain types of exempt levels of radioactive materials.
The additional licenses would permit the disposal of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) and byproduct material which is primarily residue left over from uranium mining. The LLRW facilities would be available to the more than 1600 generators of LLRW in Texas as well as certain federal customers such as the Department of Energy.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has publicly released a draft byproduct license and a draft LLRW license is expected to be released soon.
WCS is a subsidiary of Valhi Inc. (NYSE: VHI). Valhi is engaged in the titanium dioxide pigments component products (security products furniture components and performance marine components) and waste management industries.
