Whats Moved Voters? Diligence to Elect Representatives Wholl Respect the Constitution

We will not forget what they do in office width=1065th in a Series by Texas Author Carol Sewell Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas  The good news is that We the People" have woken up & are rising to take a stand demanding a return to the Constitution & liberty.  But as we do this it is important to stay diligent:  Just as Americans said with their votes Tuesday  that we will not forget what our elected officials do in office  is letting them know (daily if necessary) that we are watching like hawks & will hold their feet to the fire.   The Early American colonies had a king who liked to spend other peoples money just as we today have a President & Congress who like to spend other peoples money!  Obviously history does tend to repeat itself when the citizens (and voters) forget what their true history is.  When we fail to be diligent to elect representatives that will respect the Constitution we end up slipping and sliding our way towards tyranny. 90 years before Americas Great Awakening tensions began building with England. Starting with King Charles of England with the exception of the reign of William & Mary each succeeding King thought of the colonies as their own personal money bag.  The final straw came with King George III who had just fought an expensive war with France and decided to let the colonies foot the bill for his army.  He started enacting taxes on the colonies and since the colonies had no representation in Parliament they could not protest.  They had no voice to raise against these very punitive taxes and tariffs. Tragically America again today is under assault from the very leaders we have put in place through our election process.  In the last two years it appears we have no voice against the punitive and destructive policies /coming out of Washington.  We do have representation but they refuse to listen to the very citizens who pay their salaries.  Lack of representation was one of the reasons for the Revolutionary War. The Tea Act of 1773 was the catalyst for the Boston Tea Party" and led an irate King George to order the closing of the port of Boston thus cutting off the flow of supplies to the city.  This brought the angered colonists into greater unity as they came together to help the people of Boston in their hour of need.  Samuel Adams and his Committees of Correspondence proclaimed King George a tyrant and began declaring that they had No king but King Jesus!" Around the colonies honorable men began to arise to take the lead in bringing unity to the colonies and in what would become a fledgling nation.  These men were well educated hard working and the majority were Christian men filled with integrity. They were even willing to sacrifice their lives and finances for the cause of liberty.  They were not shallow thinkers as we are today.  Just read their writings and letters to each other.  It totally puts us to shame today.  Of course they did not have all of the distractions that our teens have and their educational standards were much higher that what we have.  They seemed to enjoy pondering the issues of the day and coming up with solutions.  Our Founding Fathers were extraordinary men who lived in extraordinary times.  The most frequently asked question regarding these men is were they Christians.  To some who ask this question they really want to know did these men as a whole have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and follow His teachings?  Because many of them believed it as a private matter between God and themselves this is a difficult question to answer.  All we really have to go on is their writings.  At that time the term Christian was loosely used to denote a person whose beliefs about God the world and man are generally in accord with those of the Christian religion but may not be a dedicated follower of Christ.  In this sense the founders as a whole can be referred to as Christian because their width=98beliefs actions and/or demeanor (generous decent & moral) line up with the Christian faith.  They also believed as a group that Christianity was necessary for a representative republic. Even though they had a commonality of faith they had differing ideas on government and how it should be instituted.  Some were Federalists who favored a stronger central government Republicans supported the Constitution but believed it gave the central government far less power than the Federalists thought it did.  As passionate as they were about their faith they were equally as passionate regarding their political views.     However the founders had some very basic principles in which they almost all agreed.  These principles are either derived from or at least compatible with Christianity and the Bible.  Some of these principles were:
  • A belief in God & His providence;
  • A belief & respect for Gods revealed Word the Bible;
  • A belief in the God-given power of human reason to apprehend truth and search for truth in areas where scripture is silent;
  • A belief that man is not perfect and governmental theories must consider this fact;
  • A belief that God has ordained civil government to restrain the sinful nature of man;
  • A belief that human law must correspond both to the divine law & the law of nature human laws that contradict higher law are invalid nonbinding and are to be resisted.
They also believed that governments have only such powers as are delegated to them by the people in covenants or compacts and when they attempt to usurp powers not delegated they become illegitimate and are to be resisted.  They believed that the best way to prevent governments from usurping power is to separate their powers and functions into legislative executive and judicial branches.  They also shared the belief that human nature being what it is a free enterprise economy is the best way to give people an incentive to produce width=145and develop national prosperity.  Finally they believed in God-given unalienable human rights that include life liberty and property. All of these basic beliefs were preached from the pulpits of the churches during this time.  So it was actually the teaching and preaching in the churches that formed the basis of our government as reflected in the Declaration of Independence & the Constitution. Sadly we can see from this list of the beliefs that unified the founders that we are no longer the free nation they designed.  The separation of powers that is supposed to protect us has been eroded and is no longer working.  Free enterprise has equally been eroded and is being punished by punitive taxes.  All the basic beliefs of the founders have been and are being destroyed by a government that no longer resembles the government first designed by our extraordinary Founding Fathers.  The good news is that we the people" are waking up and rising up to take a stand and speak out for a return to the Constitution and liberty.  As we do this it is important that we stay diligent holding our width=77elected officials feet to the fire so they know daily they are being watched and that we will not forget what they do in office.  Carol Sewell is the author of We the People: Know the Past Understand the Present Secure the Future" with foreword by David Barton.
