Will Talk Radio Fall Victim to the Failed Immigration Reform Bill?

It is no secret that conservative talk radio show hosts like Rush Limbaugh Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity can take enormous credit for the demise of the most recent federal immigration reform legislation.  Their call to arms of their listeners who in turn called their legislators has been touted as one of the most effective grassroots endeavors in recent memory.

Their success has not fallen on deaf ears.  Many believe that talks of resurrecting the Fairness Doctrine which required radio and television stations to give equal time to all political candidates and points of view is a direct response.
Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is among those in the Senate Majority leadership advocating revival of the Fairness Doctrine.  “It’s time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine" said Durbin only a couple of weeks ago.

In response to growing support for the Fairness Doctrine Representative Mike Pence (R-Ind.) a former radio talk show host proposed an amendment last month prohibiting the Federal Communications Commission from spending money to reimpose the Fairness Doctrine.  The amendment passed 309 to 115 in the House but Democrats in the Senate blocked a similar amendment.

Peter Ferrara Legal Director and General Counsel of the American Civil Rights Union spoke out against the Fairness Doctrine calling it anti-free speech and anti-free market.

Recently Ferrara joined CFIF Corporate Counsel and Senior Vice President Renee Giachino to discuss the issue.
