Cong. Mayra Flores Announces $6 Million in Law Enforcement Support for South Texas' Hidalgo County

Texas Insider Report: McALLEN, Texas – Congresswoman Mayra Flores (TX-34) released the following statement after $6 million dollars in federal funds were announced for Hidalgo County law enforcement. The funding will be made available through Operation Stonegarden Grant Program (OPSG), a grant program of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security geared towards enhancing border security:

“As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, programs like Operation Stonegarden not only makes our community safer, but also enables counties and jurisdictions like ours who are at the forefront of the border crisis, be best prepared to tackle security challenges,” said the hard-charging, South Texas Border Congresswoman (right.).

“This funding enables our local law enforcement heroes to get the best equipment available to do their jobs, while assisting local jurisdictions pay for personnel overtime costs.”

The OPSG program provides funding to enhance cooperation and coordination among state, local, territorial, and federal law enforcement agencies to jointly enhance security along the United States land and water borders.

For FY22’ $90 million dollars is being made available to jurisdictions across the country through this program. Since FY08’ Hidalgo County has received over $52 million dollars through the OPSG program.

The funding announcement comes on the same week that Congresswoman Flores held a law enforcement roundtable with several law enforcement jurisdictions and U.S. Custom & Border Protection representatives. In this meeting, the need for additional flexibility in grant funding program structure and spending was discussed, something the Flores will directly address with her colleagues on the House Homeland Security Committee upon her return to Washington, D.C. next month.
