Its another busy week in the Peoples House tackling the problems Americans face in their daily lives. Lets take a look at whats on the docket:
- Lifting Americans Out of Poverty: The House will be considering the2018 Farm Bill this week a key plank of our workforce development agenda. The bill includes critical workforce-oriented reforms including attaching work requirements to federal benefits and investing in education and training programsa model that has proven successful at the state level. This encourages Americans to reach their full potential by ensuring every person receiving nutrition benefits in America is working or is guaranteed training for the skills they need to find a good job. The Agriculture Committee has a full slate of resources on this critical legislation.
- This is about giving Americans the right incentives and the right skills to get into the labor force. Its what the economy needs. Its what we need. And its what can help people move into lives of self-determination. We need their talents and we want to make sure that people can flourish and succeed." Speaker Ryan
- Better Care for Our Veterans: The VA MISSION Act is a bipartisanpackage of three bills to overhaul the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and improve the care for our veterans. This includes funding for the Choice program which helps ensure veterans have access to quality care no matter where they live. Through reforms like consolidating community care programs and extending the Post-9/11 Caregiver Program to all eras the bill aims to refocus the VA back on effectively serving our nations heroes.
- Today the House Committee on Veterans Affairs doubled down on our promise to build a stronger VA for our nations heroes and ensure veterans are receiving the care and benefits they deserve by passing the VA MISSION Act bipartisan bicameral legislation supported by leading veterans service organizations VA and the White House. This is a transformational once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reform VA."House Committee on Veterans Affairs Chairman Phil Roe (R-TN)
- National Police Week: This week we will recognize the invaluable brave service given by law enforcement officers across the country. Well consider three bills to support law enforcement by: ensuring they have the resources needed to prosecute sexual assault crimes; enablingcorrectional officers to better protect their own safety; and encouragingthe creation of alliances between police and their communities. The House will also be voting on the Protect and Serve Act which allows for the federal prosecution of anyone who deliberately tries to injure law enforcement officers helping prevent attacks on our police officers as they risk their lives to protect our communities.
- We must ensure that there are steep consequences for anyone who targets our law enforcement officers. The Protect and Serve Act will serve as a significant deterrent for anyone who deliberately targets officers with violence." Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL)
Of course thats just whats on the floor. Our committees continue to work on legislation to
combat the opioid epidemic and the House is nearing action on the
largest rescissions package in history reviving a budget-cutting tool that will pare back money which has not been put to use in years. And last week the House again used the
Congressional Review Act to protect Americans from a harmful Obama-era regulation.
This just shows that while this economy is cooking" Speaker Ryan
said on Thursday there is still a whole lot more we can do to strengthen it and to ultimately improve peoples lives."
