Commissioner Buckingham and VLB Honors Fallen Heroes with Illuminated Headstones During Memorial Day Weekend

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas Texas Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., announced that, in honor of Memorial Day, the headstones of servicemembers Killed or Missing in Action will be illuminated at the VLB's four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries in Killeen, Abilene, Mission and Corpus Christi, Texas. The grounds will be open 24 hours a day starting Friday, May 22, 2026, through Monday, May 25, 2026, for night viewing.

“This tribute reflects the deep respect the Texas General Land Office (GLO) and the VLB holds for the courageous men and women who gave everything for our nation,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “Memorial Day weekend carries profound meaning for the families and communities whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice. As Chairwoman of the VLB, it is a true honor to ensure Texans have beautifully maintained Texas State Veterans Cemeteries—places where they can hold close the memories of the brave souls we remember this Memorial Day.”
