Commissioner Buckingham Announces Construction Kick-off Event for Border Wall in Starr County

In 2023, Commissioner Buckingham declared Fronton Island, a 170-acre island in Starr County, state land.

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. is pleased to invite the press to attend a Border Wall Construction Kick-off Event to be held at the newly acquired 1,402-acre ranch along the Rio Grande at Starr County's border with Mexico on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

The kick-off event comes several weeks after Commissioner Buckingham and the Texas General Land Office (GLO) acquired this ranch in Starr County along the Rio Grande and most recently made an offer to the incoming Trump Administration to use this land for construction of mass deportation facilities for criminal illegal immigrants.

Commissioner Buckingham will be available for interviews after the press conference, and media will be allowed to film on the property with a GLO escort.

In 2023, Commissioner Buckingham declared Fronton Island, a 170-acre island in Starr County, state land. Since her declaration, the land has been fortified by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas Military Department (TMD) through Operation Flat Top, and crime at this border hotspot has been halted dramatically.

Starr County is part of the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector. Since January 2021, this border sector has recorded thousands upon thousands of migrant encounters and asylum-seekers crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico into South Texas. The GLO now owns two pieces of land on the border in Starr County – encompassing more than 4,000 acres.
