Cong. Chip Roy Departing Congress for Texas Attorney General Run

Prominent & nationally recognized leader of House Freedom Caucus joins crowded field

AUSTIN, Texas (Texas Insider Report) — "Texas has a long and proud tradition of rising to defend our homes, our freedom, and our communities. I’m running for Attorney General to carry on that legacy… unafraid to fight, unafraid to win, and unafraid to defend Texas at every turn," said Central Texas Congressman Chip Roy, as he officially announced his campaign for the position of Texas Attorney General this morning.

Roy, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019, is a prominent and nationally recognized leader of the House Freedom Caucus.

He will be joining an already crowded Republican Primary field vieing to replace current Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leaving the post to run for U.S. Senator in Washington, D.C.

“Texans’ next attorney general must have a proven record of fighting to preserve, protect, and defend our legacy,” Roy says in a two-minute video used to launch his campaign, warning,

“The Texas of our dreams is under assault” – by “radical Democrats,” “open border politicians,” as well as “faceless corporations and the Chinese Communist Party,” the Congressman says.

This will be the Lone Star State's first open Attorney General race since 2014.

Roy will face several other Republican challengers in the GOP's party primary, including Texas State Senators Mayes Middleton and Joan Huffman, as well as Aaron Reitz (below, left to right,) a former Trump Administration official and a previous employee of Paxton's.

While Cong. Roy has previously served as an Assistant Attorney General under current A.G. Ken Paxton, Roy called for Paxton's resignation in 2020 amid Paxton's controversial bribery and ethics impeachment trial in the Texas Legislature.
